A tribute to Possum

When Possum was a little boy, he once had a pet chipmunk, and a pet raccoon. He would also bring home snakes in his pockets. He couldn’t get enough of the outdoors. As a teenager, he’d load up his bird dog in the back of the truck before school, spend his lunch break with the dog, and take off the minute classes let out to go quail hunting. While his buddies were checking out girls, he’d be off checking out the fish in every pond he could find..

possumAfter he got out of the army, the 20-year-old moved to Southwest Missouri so he could be within a 2 hour drive of 6 different bass-fishing lakes. He loved the competition of fishing. He won many trophies, but there was one sport he liked even more than fishing; big-game hunting. Actually, he loved everything concerning hunting. Possum owned an archery shop, learned to call wild turkey, and ran trap lines on land and river which earned him the name “Possum.” (There’s more to that story!)

Possum introduced his son to hunting at 5 years of age, bundling the kid up so much in the winter that he could barely squat down against the tree. It would be several years of consistent instruction before he let the boy start carrying an unloaded, then a loaded rifle. Possum took his wife antelope hunting in Wyoming several times, always catching the evening meal’s trout from a mountain stream. He taught his girls to hunt and to understand what conservation really is.

Possum has hunted deer in Mexico and Central America, caught Peacock Bass in Venezuela hogs in Mississippi and South Texas, and harvested a Kudu in South Africa. In 2002 he took a bull elk during a New Mexico archery hunt. He even hunts mushrooms!

possum elkWhen hunting his favorite species, trophy whitetail deer, the Ozarks just didn’t have the potential for producing big bucks with big racks. But leasing private farmland in north Missouri proved to be worth the drive year after year. Now in his late 40’s, Possum’s lifelong dream has come true: the opportunity to open a hunting lodge and outfit bow hunters, muzzleloaders, and rifle shooters where they’d have a chance at getting a shot at the buck of a lifetime in a fair-chase setting. As fun and satisfying for him as it is for his customers.
